In the past two decades, research on the informal sector has emphasized the heterogeneity of this part of the economy, example in terms of entry costs, firm size, and access to credit, forward- and backward linkages as well as human and physical capital endowments. Yet, not much research has investigated the causes of this heterogeneity and the implied inefficiencies. This is true in particular for Sub-Saharan Africa, where informality dominates urban labor markets. Understanding these causes and the implied inefficiencies is however necessary to design policy interventions that are able to remove the most binding constraints for informal entrepreneurs. This note summarizes the main findings and policy conclusions from a research project that analyzes the quantitative importance of various constraints to informal enterprises in West Africa and Madagascar.

How much more could you achieve with your life? This remarkable book provides the key to unlocking the potential you already have. There are no fancy formulae - indeed the great strength herein is its simplicity indicating the power of love to open the way that is before us all. Everyone knows that when love dominates our actions we can surpass what is the norm. In reading this book, we see how. The unlocking of what we have within is inevitable, because it is there. The ability to love what we do, and love what we are, brings out a new love of life. It guides us to do things differently, otherwise we remain as we are. Whatever your beliefs, the power of love is known and proved. While written with a love for the Bible, it reaches out and embraces everyone, whatever their leaning. It is not confined to Christianity, for love is universal. Nor is this about positive thinking / visualisation. It is about the reality of your unique potential, fulfilled by the love in your heart.

Revolutionizing Innovation and Performance Through New Experimentation Technologies Every company's ability to innovate depends on a process of experimentation whereby new products and services are created and existing ones improved. But the cost of experimentation often limits innovation. New technologies-including computer modeling and simulation-promise to lift that constraint by changing the economics of experimentation. Never before has it been so economically feasible to ask "what-if" questions and generate preliminary answers. These technologies amplify the impact of learning, paving the way for higher R&D performance and innovation and new ways of creating value for customers. InExperimentation Matters, Stefan Thomke argues that to unlock such potential, companies must not only understand the power of experimentation and new technologies, but also change their processes, organization, and management of innovation. He explains why experimentation is so critical to innovation, underscores the impact of new technologies, and outlines what managers must do to integrate them successfully. Drawing on a decade of research in multiple industries as diverse as automotive, semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and banking, Thomke provides striking illustrations of how companies drive strategy and value creation by accommodating their organizations to new experimentation technologies. As in the outcome of any effective experiment, Thomke also reveals where that has not happened, and explains why. In particular, he shows managers how to: Implement "front-loaded" innovation processes that identify potential problems before resources are committed and design decisions locked in Experiment and test frequently without overloading their organizations Integrate new technologies into the current innovation system Organize for rapid experimentation Fail early and often but avoid wasteful "mistakes" Manage projects as experiments Pointing to the custom integrated circuit industry-a multibillion dollar market-Thomke also shows what happens when new experimentation technologies are taken beyond firm boundaries, thereby changing the way companies create new products and services with customers and suppliers. Probing and thoughtful,Experimentation Matterswill influence how both executives and academics think about experimentation in general and innovation processes in particular. Experimentation has always been the engine of innovation, and Thomke reveals how it works today.

E-BOOK EXCERPT

As policymakers consider ways to increase educational attainment, generate future economic growth, and reduce public expenditures, educational opportunity for the incarcerated population should be a meaningful component of policy strategies. Designed to increase knowledge about how states are providing postsecondary education to incarcerated individuals, this brief rests on results of a national survey of state correctional education administrators (CEAs), presenting unique policy relevant information on the availability, administration, and funding of postsecondary correctional education (PSCE) in state prison systems. A central purpose of the brief is to elevate the policy attention paid to postsecondary opportunity for incarcerated persons. The data for this brief were gathered from a 19-item Web-based national survey of correctional education administrators (CEAs). Forty-three states responded, for an 86 percent response rate. Findings and discussion of the survey highlight student enrollments and completions, instructional methods, eligibility requirements, and funding sources of postsecondary education programs in state prison systems. On the basis of the findings of this study, the author offers three recommendations to facilitate effective policy innovations in the area of PSCE. Following these recommendations would advance public policy goals of increasing skill and educational acquisition for incarcerated persons and reducing unsustainably high recidivism rates. Prisoner Access to Postsecondary Education Survey is appended. (Contains 2 figures, 4 tables and 8 footnotes.).
