The facts are indisputable. When women get even a bit of education, the whole of society improves. When they get a bit of healthcare, everyone lives longer. In many ways, it has never been a better time to be a woman: a fundamental shift has been occurring. Yet from Toronto to Timbuktu the promise of equality still eludes half the world’s population. In her 2019 CBC Massey Lectures, award-winning author, journalist, and human rights activist Sally Armstrong illustrates how the status of the female half of humanity is crucial to our collective surviving and thriving. Drawing on anthropology, social science, literature, politics, and economics, she examines the many beginnings of the role of women in society, and the evolutionary revisions over millennia in the realms of sex, religion, custom, culture, politics, and economics. What ultimately comes to light is that gender inequality comes at too high a cost to us all.

"Bestselling author and star of ABC's Shark Tank Daymond John reveals how to drive the change you want to see in your life by mastering the three prongs of influence: reputation, negotiation, and relationships. Have you ever wanted to make a big change in your life but wasn't sure where to start? In Powershift, bestselling author, Founder & CEO of FUBU, and star of ABC's Shark Tank Daymond John shares the answer. To drive the change you want to see in your life, you'd better have your foot on the gas pedal and be ready to switch gears. But first, you need to lay out the groundwork so you're prepared to seize every opportunity you're given: by establishing reputation and creating a sphere of influence, by learning how to negotiate for yourself and your position, and by working to maintain those essential relationships so you can call on them later on. Drawing on never-before-told stories from his life and career, Daymond shares the lessons and principles that got him to where he is today: from how he remade his public image as he made the unlikely transition from clothing mogul to television personality, to new negotiation strategies he honed "in the tank," to how he learned to navigate a new web of relationships as a serial entrepreneur. Whether you're an innovator working to turn your big idea into a reality, a seasoned professional looking to land a major promotion, or a busy parent trying to find more time to focus on your health and well-being, Daymond shows you how to shift your power and energy in a new direction and achieve the change - big or small - that you've been dreaming of"--

This book depicts the challenges associated with the emergence of a new global order in which patterns of conflict and the role of traditional military power are in the process of radical flux. Our ideas about global order have yet to catch up with these new behavioral trends, including the rise of non-state transnational political actors in the context of neoliberal globalization. In this historical setting the modern territorial sovereign state is confronted by multiple challenges ranging from climate change to mass migration to transnational political extremism. The existing global order seems currently overwhelmed by these challenges, resulting in widespread stress and chaos that is transforming global security in ways that endanger democratic governance. The future will be determined by whether the peoples of the world make their weight felt in support of sustainable global justice and overcome the impact of oppressive and exploitative patterns of corporate and state behavior. It is this problematic set of circumstances that Power Shift addresses.

The Message of POWER SHIFT: Fed up with politics-as-usual? Most Canadians are. They (83%) want their MP to represent them and not a party in the House of Commons. Political parties, however, do not consider reforms that would shift significant power from them to citizens. Professor Lyon, breaking the party silence, speaks strongly in support of the interests of his fellow citizens. Drawing on years of experience as a political activist and political scientist, he shows both why and how the desire of Canadians for this new form of representation should be acted on, now. He does this by presenting readers with a detailed model of the new politics. He argues that adopting the model would establish the close collaborative relationship of citizens, their MPs, cabinet and civil servants needed to strengthen the performance of government. Professor Lyon urges politicians to respect the desire of citizens for fundamental change. Party politics is, he states, l9th century politics, and fails to meet the needs of today. Citizen politics for the 21st century is what he proposes and, he argues, Canada stands on the cusp of making the change to them.

Power Shift? Political Leadership and Social Media examines how political leaders have adapted to the challenges of social media, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and memes, among other means of persuasion. Established political leaders now use social media to grab headlines, respond to opponents, fundraise, contact voters directly, and organize their election campaigns. Leaders of protest movements have used social media to organize and galvanize grassroots support and to popularize new narratives: narratives that challenge and sometimes overturn conventional thinking. Yet each social media platform provides different affordances and different attributes, and each is used differently by political leaders. In this book, leading international experts provide an unprecedented look at the role of social media in leadership today. Through a series of case studies dealing with topics ranging from Emmanuel Macron and Donald Trump's use of Twitter, to Justin Trudeau's use of selfies and Instagram, to how feminist leaders mobilize against stereotypes and injustices, the authors argue that many leaders have found additional avenues to communicate with the public and use power. This raises the question of whether this is causing a power shift in the relationship between leaders and followers. Together the chapters in this book suggest new rules of engagement that leaders ignore at their peril. The lack of systematic theoretically informed and empirically supported analyses makes Power Shift? Political Leadership and Social Media an indispensable read for students and scholars wishing to gain new understanding on what social media means for leadership.

E-BOOK EXCERPT

From Major League Baseball's inception in the 1880s through World War II, team owners enjoyed monopolistic control of the industry. Despite the players' desire to form a viable union, every attempt to do so failed. The labor consciousness of baseball players lagged behind that of workers in other industries, and the public was largely in the dark about labor practices in baseball. In the mid-1960s, star players Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale staged a joint holdout for multiyear contracts and much higher salaries. Their holdout quickly drew support from the public; for the first time, owners realized they could ill afford to alienate fans, their primary source of revenue. Baseball's Power Shift chronicles the growth and development of the union movement in Major League Baseball and the key role of the press and public opinion in the players' successes and failures in labor-management relations. Swanson focuses on the most turbulent years, 1966 to 1981, which saw the birth of the Major League Baseball Players Association as well as three strikes, two lockouts, Curt Flood's challenge to the reserve clause in the Supreme Court, and the emergence of full free agency. To defeat the owners, the players' union needed support from the press, and perhaps more importantly, the public. With the public on their side, the players ushered in a new era in professional sports when salaries skyrocketed and fans began to care as much about the business dealings of their favorite team as they do about wins and losses. Swanson shows how fans and the media became key players in baseball's labor wars and paved the way for the explosive growth in the American sports economy.
