“A grand, sweeping panorama . . . richly written, finely detailed . . . vivid and memorable.”—Daily News (New York) Yearning for a better life, Anna Friedman fled Poland for New York at the turn of the century. Finding work as a maid for the Werner family, Anna discovers an elegance beyond her dreams—and the passion of Paul Werner, a man beyond her reach, even when she is in his arms. But it is Joseph Friedman whom she marries. And through an act of illicit passion that will haunt her though all her days, Anna lifts Joseph from poverty to a wealth on which the Friedman dynasty would be based for generations. Sweeping from Jazz Age New York to Nazi Germany to a sun-baked Israeli kibbutz, Evergreen has become a modern American classic—an epic novel that spans three generations of an unforgettable family—and exposes the heart of an extraordinary woman: her marriage, her children, her deceit.

From the celebrated author of The Bird Sisters, a gorgeously rendered and emotionally charged novel that spans generations, telling the story of two siblings, raised apart, attempting to share a life. It is 1938 when Eveline, a young bride, follows her husband into the wilderness of Minnesota. Though their cabin is rundown, they have a river full of fish, a garden out back, and a new baby boy named Hux. But when Emil leaves to take care of his sick father, the unthinkable happens: a stranger arrives, and Eveline becomes pregnant. She gives the child away, and while Hux grows up hunting and fishing in the woods with his parents, his sister, Naamah, is raised an orphan. Years later, haunted by the knowledge of this forsaken girl, Hux decides to find his sister and bring her home to the cabin. But Naamah, even wilder than the wilderness that surrounds them, may make it impossible for Hux to ever tame her, to ever make up for all that she, and they, have lost. Set before a backdrop of vanishing forest, this is a luminous novel of love, regret, and hope.

These 157 never-before-published letters were written by Rachel O'Connor of Evergreen Plantation in the Feliciana country of Louisiana to her brother David Weeks and his family at their home, Shadows-on-the-Teche, in the bayou country. They span a period of twenty-two years, providing valuable information on early plantation life, society, and economics. Rachel was born in 1774 at a time of great change in America. The customs of the French and Spanish frontier were being replaced by the lifestyle of the Anglo-Saxon settlers who quickly established the grand manner characteristic of the antebellum South. Rachel had ties to both worlds, the pioneer log cabins and the columned mansions. A woman planter in a man's world, she allows her readers to share her view of slavery in all its ramifications without a hint of later controversy. Rachel discusses frankly the immorality of overseers, slave concubinage, and slave discipline, revealing her own paternalistic attitude toward slaveholding. Her letters also discuss epidemics, the weather, her neighbors, her crops and gardens, and always her struggle against lawsuits and debts. The book contains a historical introduction to the period, a genealogical chart of Rachel's family, and a "Who's Who" of important persons mentioned in the letters. Explanatory annotations and editorial notes provide information relative to persons and events. Maps and sketches orient the setting of Rachel's world. A concluding summary traces the descendants of her relatives and friends, and describes the site of Evergreen Plantation as it exists today.

A founding father of British filmmaking, Victor Saville created such classics as ""I Was a Spy"", ""Evergreen"", ""Gooodbye, Mr. Chips"", ""The Mortal Storm"", "" A Woman's Face"" and ""Green Dolphin Street"". Completed by Saville's collaborator, Hollywood biographer Roy Moseley, in the years following Saville's death in 1979, this book presents the filmmaker's memories of the development of the film industry in England and the United States, from the silent screen to ""talkies"", from black-and-white to Technicolor, from the golden age of Hollywood to the rise of television. Born in Birmingham in 1879, Saville started small in the film business after being discharged from his unit in World War I following an injury. Working first for a distribution company, Saville was exposed to the earliest British silent films as well as imported ""blockbusters"" such as ""The Birth of a Nation"" and ""Intolerance"" by D.W. Griffith. In 1922, he ventured to Hollywood to persuade silent film star Betty Compson to star in his first film, ""Woman to Woman"", ultimately made with the assistance of Alfred Hitchcock in his first film job as assistant art director. He came to Hollywood permanently in 1941 when Louis B. Mayer invited him to work for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. His memoir provides an intimate and detailed look at Saville's long relationships with studio moguls Mayer and Alexander Korda and his work with an impressive list of film stars, including Robert Donat, Greer Garson, Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn, Joan Crawford, Hedy Lamarr, Margaret Sullivan, Ingrid Bergman, Jeanette MacDonald, Lana Turner, Deborah Kerr, Elizabeth Taylor, Errol Flynn and Paul Newman. Saville's circle of personal friends in Hollywood, where he lived with his wife, Phoebe, from 1941 to 1955, includ This work takes the reader behind the scenes of film's golden age to reveal the tensions and power plays involved in studio filmmaking and struggles with stars, studios, and, many times, film censors, as well as the intricacies of early production, direction and distribution methods.
