E-BOOK EXCERPT

Examining the 14 key traits of genius, from curiosity to creative maladjustment to obsession, Professor Craig Wright, creator of Yale University's popular "Genius Course," explores what we can learn from brilliant minds that have changed the world. What is genius? The word evokes iconic figures like Einstein, Beethoven, Picasso, and Mozart, whose cultural contributions have irreversibly shaped society. Yet Beethoven could not multiply. Picasso couldn't pass a fourth grade math test. And the music of Mozart is incomprehensible to Aborigines. The Hidden Habits of Genius explores the meaning of this contested term, and the unexpected motivations of those we have dubbed "genius" throughout history, from Charles Darwin and Marie Curie to Leonardo Da Vinci and Andy Warhol to Toni Morrison and Elon Musk. What personal characteristics drove these people to greatness? Wright argues that genius is about more than intellect and work ethic--it is far more complex. And the habits of mind that produce great thinking and discovery can be actively learned and cultivated. This book won't make you a genius, but it will make you more strategic, creative, and successful, and, ultimately, it will make you happier, by embracing the 14 hidden habits of genius: Work ethic Resilience Originality Childlike imagination Creative maladjustment Insatiable curiosity Passion Rebelliousness Cross-border thinking Contrarian action Relaxation Concentration Preparation Obsession

E-BOOK EXCERPT

This comprehensive project has the objective of describing and assessing pronunciation talent with special focus on its psychological and neural correlates. The first part of this undertaking describes the extensive tests necessary to measure phonetic talent in its various dimensions, such as production and perception, the segmental and suprasegmental levels of speech, and different utterance forms such as spontaneous speech, reading and imitation. Subjects are examined in their native language (German), a familiar second language (English) and, to a lesser degree, an unfamiliar language (Hindi). The project also investigates psychological and behavioral influences such as empathy or motivation on pronunciation performance, as well as correlations with general linguistic aptitude. The described measures and correlations allow a reliable classification of proficiency and talent level to be used in the selection of subjects for the neuroimaging studies in the second part of the project. These use functional magnetic resonance imaging in order to observe differences in brain activity between talented and untalented individuals during the performance of phonetic tasks (perception of phonetic differences, imitation, reading).
