E-BOOK EXCERPT

More than a legal obligation, voting is our right as citizens and defines our democracies. The lies or intellectual laziness of our economists, administrations, and judicial systems creates a façade of legality, which could be considered fraudulent: replacing the power of a Monarchy by that of a Government applying relatively dictatorial laws, does not equal progress. A matter of moral conscience arises when laws are only in favour of the same class. “What kind of world do we want to live in?” The “high finance” environment, that we now inhabit, has generated an unprecedented moral crisis and undermined our personal intellectual guidelines, i.e. our system of values. In the face of this deterioration at a time when we are seen by these “bankers” as a resource, as “Human fodder”, we need to be concerned for our already much indebted children and grandchildren. This booklet is a summary of what you should know before you vote, because just beyond this troubled period of apparent peace, trouble is brewing. EXCERPT Albert Einstein said that the world we have created is the direct result of our method of thinking, but the problems we have caused cannot be resolved in the same way. Future crises can only degenerate, multiply and become more frequent, they will not be simply ecological, since they are related to deep, structural issues in various areas: climate, demographics, economics, politics... In a procession of contentment, troubles and wars human evolution has managed to make its way to 2017. One fears that the reality looming on the horizon is more violent. If the State of affairs that I have painted seems excessive, is that not indicative of a reality that we no longer want to see or accept? ABOUT THE AUTHOR The “humanist” Boris Alexandre SPASOV, formerly Deputy Director of Radio Caribbean International, graduate of the Centre d’études diplomatiques et stratégiques in Paris and the author of several books including World Order- Moral Disorder & Humanity... What a Story! is above all a man of the people, a passionate and candid eyewitness far from the safe, comfortable couch ideologies and politically correct attitudes of our time.

Eurobarometer shared recently that 41% of the EU citizens get their main information on European topics from daily newspapers. This is also the case for those citizens who decided on the adaption of the Lisbon treaty in the two nationwide referendums, in Ireland. But, as many media researchers showed, news coverage is biased. However, it has to be biased for it is simply not possible to report the entire reality in one article. One aspect of news bias is known under the term framing. Framing leads readers to think in a certain direction for journalists underline certain aspects in a news story, and usually, cover a story only from one angle. Therefore, the journalist's angle can have a high influence on the reader's opinion. The study follows these hints and examines the news coverage before the two Irish referendums on the Lisbon treaty took place. Applying a content and framing analysis of the two most selling Irish newspapers, namely 'the Irish Times' and 'the Irish Independent', it aims to make statements about the framing of the treaty in the news, and gives evidence to the informative value of the title.

A step-by-step guide to every American’s most fundamental right and civic duty —just in time for the 2020 presidential election. Nothing is more important to the health of a democracy than the right to vote. Yet less than half of eligible voters routinely show up to the polls. Part of the problem is that the basics of the process we use to choose our elected leaders remain shrouded in mystery for many Americans. In What You Need to Know About Voting—and Why, law professor and constitutional scholar Kimberly Wehle unravels that mystery, offering practical, useful advice on the mechanics of voting and an enlightening survey of its history and future. What is a primary? How does the electoral college work? Who gets to cast a ballot and why? Wehle answers these questions and more in a clear, engaging, and conversational tone. From where and how to register in the various states to how to change your registration when you move, this indispensable book outlines the necessary steps to take to become an active participant in the electoral process. For new voters, would-be voters, young people looking ahead to the next election, and those seeking citizenship, What You Need to Know About Voting—and Why is a timely and informative guide, providing the background you need in order to make informed choices that will shape our shared destiny for decades to come.

E-BOOK EXCERPT

During the 2015 federal election, the Liberal Party pledged that, if elected, they would end the “first past the post” electoral system, where whichever candidate receives the most votes wins a riding even if they have not received a majority of all votes cast. In early 2017, the Liberals reneged on their campaign promise, declaring that there was a lack of public consensus about how to reform the system. Despite the broken promise – and because of the public outcry – discussions about electoral reform will continue around the country. Challenging the idea that first past the post is obsolete, Should We Change How We Vote? urges Canadians to make sure they understand their electoral system before making drastic changes to it. The contributors to this volume assert that there is perhaps no institution more misunderstood and misrepresented than the Canadian electoral system – praised by some for ensuring broad regional representation in Ottawa, but criticized by others for allowing political parties with less than half the popular vote to assume more than half the seats in Parliament. They consider not only how the system works, but also its flaws and its advantages, and whether or not electoral reform is legitimate without a referendum. An essential guide to the crucial and ongoing debate about the country’s future, Should We Change How We Vote? asks if there are alternative reforms that would be easier to implement than a complete overhaul of the electoral system.

E-BOOK EXCERPT

The New York Times best-selling author of Radical takes readers on a soul-searching journey through impoverished villages in the Himalayan mountains, daring them to make a difference in a world of urgent need, starting right where they live. “Grippingly vulnerable and unforgettable. I could not put this book down.”—Ann Voskamp, author of One Thousand Gifts While leading a team on a week-long trek of the Himalayas, bestselling author and pastor David Platt was stunned by the human needs he encountered, an experience so dramatic that it "changed the trajectory of my life." Meeting a man who'd lost his eye from a simple infection and seeing the faces of girls stolen from their families and trafficked in the cities, along with other unforgettable encounters, opened his eyes to the people behind the statistics and compelled him to wrestle with his assumptions about faith. In Something Needs to Change, Platt invites readers to come along on both the adventure of the trek, as well as the adventure of seeking answers to tough questions like, "Where is God in the middle of suffering?" "What makes my religion any better than someone else's religion?" and "What do I believe about eternal suffering?" Platt has crafted an irresistible message about what it means to give your life for the gospel--to finally stop talking about faith and truly start living it. Advance praise for Something Needs to Change “Rugged. Authentic. Gritty. Real. Worshipful. There are no other books like this one. I always pick up David’s books with a sense of excitement and, quite honestly, apprehension—because I know that areas of compromise and complacency in my life are going to be exposed. But this book exceeded even my high expectations, for which I am grateful. And so will you be. As David writes, it’s time to run, not walk. Let’s go.”—J. D. Greear, president of the Southern Baptist Convention “Extraordinary and challenging. I’ve just never read a book like this before. I am so moved. Bring your full heart to this story and watch how God opens your eyes, changes your mind, and broadens the dreams you have for your life.”—Annie F. Downs, best-selling author of 100 Days to Brave and Remember God “If you dare to read this book, you might just have an unexpected encounter with Jesus that leaves you weeping on the floor, as David’s experience did. Something changes within us when the seemingly overwhelming needs of the world present themselves simply in the life of a single person. Ultimately, I pray your compassion will be transformed to action.”—Santiago “Jimmy” Mellado, president and CEO of Compassion International
