Our cultural darlings make music; we make them mythic. Every musical genre begets a community of listeners, performers, and critics, and quite often those categories are blurred. From the principled punk refusal of celebrity to hip-hop's celebration of its power, the music world is self-obsessed. Stars Don't Stand Still in the Sky assembles scholars, music writers, industry workers, and musicians, who offer a range of opinions and experience of the nature of fame. The collection focuses on commerce, the crowd, performance and image, history and memory, and romance. Contributors discuss black women icons, love-songs, the legacy of the blues, the image of the tortured rock star, MTV, the politics of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the joy of line-dancing, and more. The contributors are James Bernard, Anthony DeCurtis, Katherine Dieckmann, Chuck Eddy, Paul Gilroy, Daniel Glass, Lawrence Grossberg, Jessica Hagedorn, Kathleen Hanna, James Hannaham, Dave Hickey, Jon Langford, Greil Marcus, Angela McRobbie, Paul D. Miller (a.k.a. DJ Spooky), Barbara O'Dair, Ann Powers, Toshi Reagon, Simon Reynolds, Robert Santelli, Jon Savage, Danyel Smith, Arlene Stein, Deena Weinstein, and Ellen Willis.

Winner of the Ohioana Book Award in Poetry (2014) Drunk on the sun and the sea, Kazim Ali’s new poems swoop linguistically but ground themselves vividly in the daily and real. Both imprisoned by endlessness and dependent on it for nurturing and care, in Sky Ward Ali goes further than ever before in sounding out the spaces between music and silence, between sky and ocean, between human and eternal. “Daily I wish stitched here to live,” moans his Prometheus, wondering what release from familiar bondage might actually portend. “So long liberation,” his Icarus sings as he plummets from the sky with desperation and grace, ready to unfeather and plunge into the everything-new. Whether in the extended poem-prayer to Alice Coltrane or in the “deleted scenes” and “alternate endings” to his critically acclaimed volume Bright Felon, or in the spirit-infused and multi-faceted lyrics he has become known for, Ali once again reinvents possibilities for the personal lyric and narrative.

Sent by their mother to live with their devout, self-sufficient grandmother in a small Southern town, Maya and her brother, Bailey, endure the ache of abandonment and the prejudice of the local “powhitetrash.” At eight years old and back at her mother’s side in St. Louis, Maya is attacked by a man many times her age–and has to live with the consequences for a lifetime. Years later, in San Francisco, Maya learns about love for herself and the kindness of others, her own strong spirit, and the ideas of great authors (“I met and fell in love with William Shakespeare”) will allow her to be free instead of imprisoned. Poetic and powerful, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is a modern American classic that will touch hearts and change minds for as long as people read. From the Paperback edition.

"This book of poetry is about stumbling through heartbreak and learning to change and grow from it in the end. It's about holding on and embracing the pain, allowing yourself to feel it entirely, cup it in your hands and stare at it until you start to understand it." - Faraway 'Sad Birds Still Sing 2' is anonymous Author Faraway's followup book of modern poetry to their debut release, 'Sad Birds Still Sing'. It is a headfirst dive into the world of heartbreak and the trials of getting over loss and the impact it has on the human spirit, mind, and heart. It is for anyone who has ever had their heart broken in this life. It is for those who've lost hope and those who have once lost hope. It is both a tragic ending and a gorgeous beginning, the darkness of the tunnel and the light at the very end of it. Taking inspiration from modern day poets, Faraway mostly writes in short form poetry, making 'Sad Birds Still Sing 2' a quick read of sorts for those in need of some inspiration and motivation to live their life to the fullest.

E-BOOK EXCERPT

How does one go from English villager to wilderness dweller? Chris Czajkowski was born and raised at the edge of a large village in England, until she abandoned the company of others to roam the countryside in search of the natural world. As a young adult she studied dairy farming and travelled to Uganda to teach at a farm school. Returning to England she found nothing to hold her interest, so in 1971 she hitchhiked around the world spending as little time as possible in cities. Her travels took her to remote areas, where she learned mountain skills and discovered the wonderful joy of solitude. Arriving in Canada in 1979, Chris travelled to the West Chilcotin and built a cabin deep in the woods of British Columbia's Coast Mountains. A few years later she built her second cabin beside an untouched and remote high-altitude lake. She called her new home Nuk Tessli and lived there for twenty-three years, turning her paradise into a thriving wilderness resort and guiding business. In 1980, Chris began writing about her adventures. Encouraged by her supporter Peter Gzowski, she published CABIN AT SINGING RIVER, which became a national sensation and led to more books about living in BC's beautiful wilderness. In 2012, after many happy years of living alone in the bush, Chris sold Nuk Tessli, closing a significant chapter of her life. AND THE RIVER STILL SINGS goes beyond the tales with which we are so familiar, exploring both the experiences that led Chris to a solitary lifestyle and her transition to a life closer to the grid. Chris's "retirement home" has easier access to a road and neighbours although she still lives beyond the end of the power line. Her new book is a personal and honest insight into the "Wilderness Dweller.""
